Directions: Adrafinil is water soluble. Do not use if you are pregnant/breastfeeding. Adrafinil has some safety warnings. Please see below
Adrafinil belongs to the “eurgeroic” category. It is broken down into Modafinil within the liver which results in very similar effects. Adrafinil and Modafinil are both wakefulness enhancers. Unlike Modafinil, Adrafinil is currently unregulated in the USA and can be purchased privately. With this said, it is a very powerful compound that can have unpleasant side effects so caution is advised.
Adrafinil Method of Action
Although the exact method of action of Adrafinil is not entirely clear, there are some popular theories to its effects. One popular theory suggests that it increases the brain neurotransmitter, hypocretin. Hyprocretin helps promote wakefulness, arousal and appetite. Increasing the level of hypocretin in the hypothalamus is thought to increase the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and histamine. The increase of these three chemicals in the hypothalamus is thought to be the main nootropic action of adrafinil and modafinil.
There is another possible method of action of adrafinil that is less popular than the above mentioned theory. The theory suggests that adrafinil and modafinil activate the glutamate pathways and inhibit the GABAeric ones. This would lead to increased alertness and wakefulness.
Adrafinil will carry some if not all the benefits of Modafinil. Some say it is slightly weaker than Modafinil while others find it just as if not more effective. It is a great substance for promoting alertness and it may have considerably less side effects than stimulants that rely strictly on monoaminergic systems
People who have taken Adrafinil have suggested that it greatly improves cognition and memory. It can be used in times of high mental demand to help promote focus and mental alertness. There is evidence that Adrafinil can help with focus and even assist with ADHD symptoms. It should in no way be self-prescribed or used without advice of a doctor
Adrafinil and modafinil carry some degree of risk. Both substances can put an added strain on the heart and while it is less strenuous than typical amphetamines, there is still a substantial degree of risk. People with healthy hearts should not be as concerned however, in no way should one use adrafinil or modafinil if they have current or previous heart complications. Mixing adrafinil with other stimulants will greatly increase the chances of heart complications.
Common Side Effects
- Dry Mouth
Serious Side Effects (less common)
- Chest Pain
- Heart Palpitations
- Easy Bruising
- Hallucinations – unusual behaviors
Modafinil/Adrafinil can both combine with stimulants and act synergistically and this should be a concern if you are taking either. Substances that increase heart rate or blood pressure should not be combined with Adrafinil
There is evidence that modafinil can make some types of birth control less effective. It is unclear if Adrafinil carries this same effect however it is likely to have a similar action.
When adrafinil is broken down within the liver it can put strain on the system and raise liver enzymes. If one already has indications of high liver enzymes, they should not take adrafinil as it can lead to liver damage or failure. It is recommended to take a blood test to evaluate liver health before using adrafinil.
The effects of adrafinil and its effects on the liver are highly exaggerated online. To give an example, it has a similar toxicity profile to Tylenol. One with a healthy liver should not be concerned about adrafinil if they take it safety and responsibly. With this said, it is absolutely irresponsible to take adrafinil and mix it with drugs and alcohol. The best way to avoid complications with adrafinil is to be responsible and follow the above advice.
Modafinil and Adrafinil carry much less risk of addiction than other stimulants however it can still become highly addictive. Any substance that involves dopamine carries a higher risk of addiction and adrafinil falls into this category. Adrafinil carries less euphoriant properties than amphetamines and has a smaller abuse potential but caution is still advised. If used responsibly several times a week as a wakefulness promoter, addiction is likely to be a small chance.
Taking adrafinil frequently can result in tolerance to build. This is more likely if used frequently for a long period of time and cycling can help eliminate this problem.
